What is a fecal occult blood test?
A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of blood in stool, which is not visible to the naked eye. This test is essential for identifying bleeding in the digestive tract, which may be caused by conditions such as ulcers, colon polyps, or colorectal cancer.
When is this test recommended?
The test is recommended when there is suspicion of internal bleeding, during investigations for diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases, or as part of colorectal cancer screening, especially for people over 50 or those with risk factors.
Collection and preparation for the test:
To ensure accurate results and avoid potential interferences, it is advisable to follow these collection and preparation instructions:
- Collect a sufficient amount of stool in a clean and dry container, obtained from the pharmacy.
- Open the collection tube provided by the CDG laboratory and use a spatula to collect 1-2 ml or 1-2 g of stool (about the size of a pea) and place it in the tube containing the liquid.
- Close the tube and briefly shake it to disperse the contents.
- Bring the tube to the laboratory within 6 hours.
- If you do not have time, store the sample in the refrigerator at 2-8℃ and return it the next day.
- It is recommended that within 72 hours before collection, you avoid consuming foods such as red meat, tomatoes, turnips, beets, pomegranate, horseradish.

Time of result release: the next day.
