Direct Bilirubin Analysis in Serum
The direct bilirubin test is a blood test used to measure the amount of conjugated bilirubin (direct bilirubin) in the blood. Bilirubin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin from old red blood cells. Indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin is converted to direct (conjugated) bilirubin in the liver before being excreted in bile and eliminated from the body.
Preparation for the Test
- It is recommended to perform the test in the morning on an empty stomach.
- The day before the test, avoid fatty and fried foods, alcohol, smoking, and stress.
- You may take your usual prescribed medications, but do not take over-the-counter medications without consulting your doctor first. In some cases, your doctor may suggest discontinuing certain medications before the test.
- It is not recommended to have blood tests done on the same day as X-rays or physiotherapy procedures.
- When monitoring a laboratory test over time, it should be performed at the same time of day as the previous test.
Results are available on the same day!
