What is cervico-vaginal cytology in liquid medium (PAP test)?
Cervico-vaginal cytology in liquid medium, also known as the PAP Test Babeș-Papanicolaou, is a screening test used to detect abnormal or precancerous cells in the cervix and vagina. The test can identify infections, inflammations, and precancerous cells, helping to prevent cervical cancer.
How does the liquid-based PAP test differ from the traditional one?
Unlike the traditional PAP test, where cells are directly smeared onto a slide, in the liquid-based method, the collected cells are suspended in a special liquid, filtered, and then analyzed. This provides better accuracy and more efficient processing of samples, reducing the risk of inconclusive results.
When is this test recommended?
The PAP test is recommended as part of regular screening for all sexually active women or those over the age of 21. It is advised to repeat the test at regular intervals as directed by a doctor to detect cellular changes early.
Preparation for the PAP test:
To ensure the most accurate results, it is recommended:
- Avoid sexual intercourse, the use of creams, tampons, or other vaginal products for 72 hours before the test.
- Do not perform the test during menstruation; ideally, schedule it mid-cycle, between days 10 and 20.
How is the test performed?
The doctor will use a small brush or spatula to collect cells from the cervix. These cells are then suspended in a special liquid and analyzed in a laboratory for the presence of abnormal cells.
Time to receive results:
Results of the liquid-based PAP test are usually available within 7-10 working days.
