Serum Phenylalanine Determination

The serum phenylalanine test is a blood test used to measure the amount of phenylalanine, an essential amino acid, in the blood. This test is particularly important for diagnosing and monitoring phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic metabolic disorder in which the body cannot properly break down phenylalanine.

Preparation for the Test

  • It is recommended to perform the test in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • The day before the test, avoid fatty and fried foods, alcohol, smoking, and stress.
  • You may take your usual prescribed medications, but do not take over-the-counter medications without consulting your doctor first. In some cases, your doctor may suggest discontinuing certain medications before the test.
  • It is not recommended to have blood tests done on the same day as X-rays or physiotherapy procedures.
  • When monitoring a laboratory test over time, it should be performed at the same time of day as the previous test.

* The analysis is performed in Germany. The result is released within 7 working days after shipment. For more details, please discuss with the Call Center/Reception Operator.
