The transrectal ultrasound of the prostate and urinary system is a non-invasive, accurate, and safe imaging method, recommended for men to assess the health of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and prostate. It is indicated for both diagnosing urinary symptoms and monitoring urological health after the age of 40.
What is examined:
Kidneys – for detecting kidney stones, cysts, or signs of inflammation
Urinary bladder – to identify urine retention, bladder wall thickness, or other abnormalities
Prostate (via transrectal approach) – to evaluate size, structure, and the presence of conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, or other disorders
When is the ultrasound recommended:
Weak or interrupted urine stream
Frequent urination, especially at night
Pain or discomfort during urination
Suspected prostatitis or BPH
Ongoing monitoring after urological treatments
Preparation for the ultrasound:
Intestinal preparation is required: 2–3 hours before the scan, use a cleansing enema with 1.5 liters of cold water or a rectal suppository
1 hour before the exam, drink 500 ml of still water to ensure a full bladder
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to facilitate access and improve comfort during the procedure
