General Ultrasound Examination for Men
(thyroid gland, abdominal cavity, urogenital system, prostate – transrectal)
The general ultrasound is a complex diagnostic scan recommended to be performed annually, ideally together with a consultation from a medical specialist or as a preventive check-up. It can be performed either upon a doctor’s referral or voluntarily by individuals who want to monitor their health status.
It is a non-invasive, painless imaging procedure that provides accurate and detailed information about various internal organs — without requiring hospitalization or disrupting your daily routine.
Organs examined:
- Thyroid gland
- Liver
- Spleen
- Gallbladder
- Pancreas
- Kidneys
- Urinary bladder
- Prostate (via transrectal examination)
Preparation for the ultrasound:
One hour before the scan:
- Drink 500 ml of still water (to ensure the bladder is full)
On the day of the scan:
- Arrive on an empty stomach (no food for at least 6 hours)
- Do not smoke or chew gum in the morning
- Prescribed medications may be taken with small sips of plain water
- Avoid: juices, tea, coffee, lemon water
One day before the scan, avoid foods that may cause bloating:
- Dairy products
- Cabbage, beans, other legumes
- Fruits (apples, bananas, grapes), fruit juices
- Pasta
- Carbonated drinks, compotes, sweets
- Fatty, fried or spicy foods
Recommended supplements:
- Digestive enzymes:
(Creon 10,000, Panzinorm 10,000, Triferment Forte 10,000, Mezim Forte 10,000)
– 1 capsule during meals, 1–2 times/day - Simethicone 40 mg:
(Espumisan 40 mg, Balonix Med 80 mg, Flaton 50 mg, Flatulence 80 mg)
– 1 capsule 3 times/day after meals or 2 capsules if experiencing excessive bloating
Additional notes for transrectal prostate ultrasound:
Proper bowel cleansing is essential for an accurate prostate examination.
Preparation options (2–3 hours before the scan):
- Cleansing enema with 1.5 litres of cool water
or - Rectal cleansing suppositories
Transrectal ultrasound is one of the most accurate methods for evaluating the size and structure of the prostate. It is useful for diagnosing conditions such as chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), inflammatory changes, and other urological issues.
