Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme found in many tissues of the body, especially in the liver, bones, and bile ducts. The ALP serum test is a blood test used to evaluate liver function, bone health, and to detect metabolic or inflammatory conditions.
When is this test recommended?
As part of a liver profile (to assess the liver and bile ducts)
For monitoring liver diseases: hepatitis, cirrhosis, biliary obstruction
In suspected bone disorders: rickets, Paget’s disease, bone tumors
For metabolic evaluation in children during periods of rapid growth
In patients experiencing fatigue, bone pain, or liver dysfunction
Preparation for the test:
Blood should be collected in the morning, on an empty stomach
24 hours before the test, avoid:
Alcohol
Fatty foods
Intense physical activity
Prescribed medications can be taken, but inform the medical staff about any ongoing treatments
The test is not recommended on the same day as imaging or physiotherapy procedures
For monitoring, it is best to perform the test at the same time of day as the previous one
Results are available on the same day!
