A vaginal flora smear
Price: 220 MDL
A vaginal flora smear is a laboratory test used to analyze the microflora of the vagina. It detects the presence of "good" bacteria (such as lactobacilli), as well as bacteria or microorganisms that may cause infections, such as pathogenic bacteria, fungi (e.g., Candida), or parasites (e.g., Trichomonas). The test helps diagnose bacterial vaginosis, fungal infections, or other imbalances in vaginal flora.
When is this test recommended?
The test is recommended in the following situations:
- When symptoms such as itching, irritation, unusual vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor, or discomfort during sexual activity occur.
- For monitoring vaginal health during pregnancy.
- In cases of recurrent infections.
Preparation for a vaginal flora smear:
To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guidelines:
- Avoid sexual contact for 24 hours before the test.
- Do not use vaginal products (creams, tampons, douches) for 48 hours before the test.
- Do not perform the test during menstruation. It is ideal to schedule it a few days after the menstrual cycle ends.
- Inform your doctor if you are taking antibiotics, antifungals, or other medications, as they may influence the test results. Your doctor will decide whether it is necessary to temporarily discontinue the treatment before the test.
How is the test conducted?
The doctor collects a sample of vaginal discharge using a sterile swab or spatula. The sample is spread on a slide and stained to identify and examine microorganisms under a microscope.
Time to receive results:
Vaginal flora smear results are usually available within 1–2 business days.
