Homocysteine is an amino acid that results as an intermediate product in the metabolism of methionine – an essential amino acid obtained from the diet.

An elevated level of homocysteine in the blood (hyperhomocysteinemia) is often caused by a diet low in vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid, which are essential for the conversion of homocysteine into other useful compounds in the body.

When is the homocysteine test recommended?

Suspected increased cardiovascular risk (myocardial infarction, stroke)

Diagnosed cardiovascular disease – for monitoring

Evaluation of risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Nutritional deficiencies of vitamin B6, B12, or folic acid

Recurrent spontaneous miscarriages

Pregnancy planning and monitoring

Preparation for the test:

Blood collection is done in the morning, on an empty stomach

Avoid alcohol consumption in the 24 hours before the test

Do not take B vitamin supplements before testing (unless prescribed by your doctor)

Inform the medical team if you are on long-term medication

The result is available on the same day.
