Tumor markers are substances, mostly proteins, that are produced by the tumor cells themselves or sometimes by the human body as a response reaction to the presence of tumor cells. These substances can be detected in blood, urine or tissue samples. They can be used in conjunction with other tests and investigations to diagnose certain types of cancer, can predict or help monitor the response to certain oncological treatments, and also can help in the early detection of a relapse of the disease.
The oncological profile for men comprises several tests that help determine the increase of tumor markers specific to oncological pathologies:
-(AFP) Alfa-fetoprotein
-CA 19-9 (pancreatic cancer)
-(CEA) Carcinoembryonic antigen
-(PSA free) Prostate-specific antigen free
-(PSA total) Prostate-specific antigen total
-CA 72-4 (gastric cancer)
Preparation for the investigation:
- Blood sample collection can be done between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM, after a 12-hour fasting period.
- The day before the investigation, exclude: fatty and fried food, alcohol, smoking, and stress.
- Inform the doctor about any medications being taken.
- Performing blood tests on the same day after an X-ray or physiotherapy procedures is not recommended.
- If monitoring through serial testing, samples should be collected at the same time of day as the previous test
The result is issued on the same day.
Final interpretation is provided by the attending physician or a specialist, considering the patient's medical history and clinical picture.
