High triglycerides are a risk factor for diabetes or pancreatic pathologies. Hypertriglyceridemia is a risk factor for coronary artery disease, especially when low HDL is present.
The lipid profile comprises a set of blood tests that measure the level of triglycerides, total cholesterol, as well as the content of high-density lipoproteins in cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-cholesterol):
Apolipoprotein A in serum
Apolipoprotein B in serum
Cholesterol in serum
(HDL-cholesterol) High-density lipoproteins in serum
(LDL-cholesterol) Low-density lipoproteins in serum
Triglycerides in serum
Preparation for the investigation:
- Blood sample collection can be done between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM, after a 12-hour fasting period.
- The day before the investigation, exclude: fatty and fried food, alcohol, smoking, and stress.
- Inform the doctor about any medications being taken.
- Performing blood tests on the same day after an X-ray or physiotherapy procedures is not recommended.
- If monitoring through serial testing, samples should be collected at the same time of day as the previous test
The result is issued on the same day.
Final interpretation is provided by the attending physician or a specialist, considering the patient's medical history and clinical picture.
