About the investigation

MRI of the spine is a method of choice in assessing the structures of the spine and spinal cord, monitoring neurological pathologies or organic changes. In particular cases, especially when inflammation or tumors are suspected, the examination should be supplemented by intravenous administration of a contrast substance.

Scope of investigation

MRI of lumbosacral spine with contrast can detect and analyze bone changes (tumors, subsidence, inflammation, etc.) in vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, meningeal layers or soft tissues in the vicinity of the cervical spine. This type of investigation is commonly used to highlight herniated discs and possible compressions of nerve roots.

Preparation for investigation

MRI of lumbosacral spine does not require special prior preparation or a rehabilitation period after the procedure, so you can continue your normal daily activities. There are no food restrictions, unless told otherwise by the doctor. Women are recommended to remove make-up before the investigation, because some cosmetics contain various metal powders that can interfere with the image. Before the investigation, the nurse will ask you to remove all metal objects (glasses, watch, magnetic cards, jewelry, etc.), because they can be quickly attracted by the magnetic field. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any kind of metal implant (cardiac stent, pacemaker, IUD), because it may not work properly after MRI and may pose threat to your life. It is useful to bring any medical documents in case of previously diagnosed diseases.
